Example 3; Preparation and Isolation of (S), (R)-Mandelate Ester; A three-neck-flask (0.25 L) is charged with toluene (70 ml), S-mandelic acid (3.04 g) and NaH-60% (1.6 g). The mixture is heated to reflux and then cooled to room temperature. 3-isobutyl glutaric anhydride (3.4 g) is added drop-wise. The solution is stirred for 6 hours at room temperature. The solvent is evaporated, and the residue is crystallized from ethyl acetate and toluene mixture to get an off-white solid of (S)-4-(((S)-carboxy(phenyl)methoxy)carbonyl)-3-isobutylbutanoic acid (Mandelate ester).
