Synthesis and Properties of Cationic Gradient Brush Copolymers Carrying PEO Side Chains and Catechol Moieties

Synthesis and study of brush copolymers carrying long PEO side chains and catechol moieties are reported. Kinetics of reversible-addition-fragmentation chain-transfer copolymerization of 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEOMEMA) is studied by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and 1H NMR spectroscopy, which allow calculating not only copolymerization rate but also the evolution of copolymer composition during copolymerization. Molecular weight Mn and dispersity D of the copolymers are determined by SEC with triple detection. Well defined gradient copolymers p(DMAEMA-co-PEOMEMA) of various composition with degree of polymerization close to 100 and D less than 1.18 are synthesized. For attachment of catechol moieties and introduction of positive charge, DMAEMA units are quaternized with 2-chloro-3,4-dihydroxyacetophenone. The use of tetrahydrofuran as a solvent for that reaction allows obtaining the degree of quaternization close to 100%. Positively charged catechol brush copolymers and their solutions are characterized by H-1 NMR, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, potentiometric titration, and water contact angle measurements, and their properties are compared with those of similar neutral catechol brush copolymers.

Implementation of Biocatalysis in Continuous Flow for the Synthesis of Small Cyclic Amines

Significant progress has been made in establishing transaminases as robust biocatalysts for the green and scalable synthesis of a diverse range of chiral amines.([1]) However, very few examples on the amination of small cyclic ketones have been reported.([2]) Cyclic ketones are particularly challenging for transaminase enzymes because they do not display the well-defined small and large substituent areas that are characteristic for the biocatalytic mechanism. In this work, we exploited the broad substrate scope of the (S)-selective transaminase from Halomonas elongate (HeWT) to develop an efficient biocatalytic system in continuous flow to generate a range of small cyclic amines which feature very often in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.([3]) Tetrahydrofuran-3-one and other challenging prochiral ketones were rapidly (5-45 min) transformed to their corresponding amines with excellent molar conversion (94-99%) and moderate to excellent ee.

Rubrene-based electrochemiluminescence (r-ECL) cells with two different solvent systems is prepared, one in a co-solvent system with a mixture of 1,2-dichlorobenzene and propylene carbonate (DCB : PC, v/v 3 : 1) and another in a single solvent system of tetrahydrofuran (THF), as the medium to form a liquid-electrolyte (L-El). Solid-state effect on luminescent properties of thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecule with aggregation induced emission: A theoretical perspective

Solid-state effect plays an important role in defining the nature of excited states for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules and further affects their luminescence properties. Theoretical investigation of photophysical properties with explicit consideration of intermolecular interactions in solid phase, is highly desired. In this work, the luminescent properties of new TADF molecule SBF-BP-DMAC with aggregation induced emission (AIE) feature are theoretically studied both in solution and solid phase. Solvent environment effect in Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is simulated by polarizable continuum model (PCM) and solid-state effect is considered by the combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method. By combing thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) theory with first principles calculation, excited state energy consumption process is investigated. Our results show that the calculated prompt fluorescence efficiency, delayed fluorescence efficiency and total fluorescence efficiency in THF is 3.0%, 0.4 parts per thousand and 3.0% respectively, and corresponding value increases to 14.4%, 31.5% and 45.9% for molecule in solid phase, this verifies the AIE feature. To detect the inner mechanisms, the geometrical structures, Huang-Rhys (HR) factors and reorganization energies as well as excited state transition properties are analyzed. Decreased HR factor and reorganization energy are found in solid phase, this is caused by the restricted torsion motion of DMAC unit in rigid environment. Thus, non-radiative energy consumption process is suppressed and enhanced fluorescence efficiency is found in the solid phase. Moreover, the smaller energy gap between S1 and T1 in the solid state than that in THF, is more conducive for reverse intersystem crossing process and further improves the efficiency. This work provides reasonable explanation for the experimental measurements and reveals the inner perspectives for AIE and TADF mechanisms, which is advantageous to develop new non-doped OLEDs with advanced feature. Controllable Synthesis of Amphiphilic Block Copolymer PMnEOS-b-PAA and co-Assembly Morphologies of PMDEOS-b-PAA/PS-b-PAA

The co-assembly of polymers has attracted increasing attention due to the ability of generating diverse assembly morphology. This paper describes the synthesis and self-assembly of several novel amphiphilic block copolymers (PMnEOS-b-PAA, n=1-3) as well as co-assembly of PMDEOS-b-PAA with typical polystyrene-b-polyacrylic acid (PS-b-PAA). Namely, these block copolymers were fabricated by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of functionalized styrene bearing different glycol units on the para-position and acrylic acid, and characterized by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum (H-1 NMR). The thermo-responsive and pH-responsive properties of these block copolymers were then investigated, and they showed good thermo- and pH- responsiveness. Furthermore, as a comparison, the self-assembly actions of these block copolymers were also examined in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/H2O and THF/toluene (PhMe) , respectively. It was found that the different block copolymers with different glycol units displayed various morphologies, especially in two different solvent systems. More interestingly, the co-assembly action of PMDEOS-b-PAA/PS-b-PAA( mass ratio 1: 1) in a mixture of THF-PhMe( volume ratio 2: 1) was detaily studied and a new spherical nanoparticle with uniformly distributed internal channel and smooth surface was found. Also, this coassembly morphology could be well repeated. The corresponding self- and co-assembly mechanisms were also proposed. This novel co-assembly mode would have potential application for further supporting catalysts, small molecules recognition and release in industry.

The synthesis of new PEPPSI-type N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Pd(II) complexes bearing long alkyl chain as precursors for the synthesis of NHC-stabilized Pd(0) nanoparticles and their catalytic applications

Six new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands bearing long-chain alkyl groups on N-atom of 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole skeleton and their Pd(II) complexes (PEPPSI type) with a close formula of trans-[PdX2(NHC)Py] (X = Cl or Br; Py = pyridine) were successfully synthesized. The yielded NHC ligands and their Pd(II) complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, H-1- and C-13 NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy and the molecular structure of 3f was determined by X-ray crystallography. All synthesized NHC-Pd(II) complexes were air-stable both as powder and in solution under ambient conditions, which allow us to test them as catalysts in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) reactions and to use them as precursors for the in situ synthesis of NHC-stabilized Pd(0) nanoparticles (NPs) during the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB) in dry tetrahydrofuran solution at room temperature. In this protocol, AB served both as a reducing agent for the reduction of NHC-Pd(II) complexes to yield NHC-stabilized Pd(0) NPs and a chemical hydrogen storage material for the concomitant hydrogen generation. The in situ synthesized NHC-stabilized Pd(0) NPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM, and XRD techniques. The catalytic activity of the in situ generated NHC-stabilized Pd(0) NPs in the dehydrogenation of AB was followed by measuring the volume of hydrogen generated versus time at room temperature. Among the five different NHC-Pd(II) complexes, 3c (dichloro[1-octadesyl3-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzyl)-(5,6-dimethylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene)](pyridine)palladium(II)) yielded the most stable Pd(0) NPs along with the highest catalytic activity in the dehydrogenation of AB (TOF= 37.7 min(-1) at 1 eqv. H-2 release). The B-11-NMR analysis of the THF solution after the catalytic dehydrogenation of AB revealed the formation of cyclopolyborazane, which is one of the important dehydrocoupling products of AB. Additionally, all NHC-Pd(II) complexes provided high yields in the SMC reactions of phenylboronic acid with various aryl bromides bearing electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups and even for aryl chlorides bearing electron-withdrawing group at room temperature with the low catalyst loadings. This study revealed that the length of the alkyl chain of NHC ligands has a significant effect on the catalytic activity of the NHC-Pd(II) complexes in the SMC reactions, the longer the alkyl chain on the N atom of NHC ligand, the higher activity of NHC-Pd(II) complex in SMC reactions. The effects of different solvents (chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, methanol, acetone and chlorobenzene) on photonic and fluorescence properties of the PtOEP organic phosphorescent material were investigated with experimental and advanced computational techniques. Dehydra-decyclization of tetrahydrofurans to diene monomers over metal oxides

The dehydra-decyclization of tetrahydrofuran (THF) to butadiene was investigated over a series of metal oxide catalysts, where a common set of chemical pathways was identified. Alongside butadiene, propene is formedviaa retro-Prins condensation as the main side product typically observed. Reaction occurred at similar temperatures on each of the oxides, but tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO2) and monoclinic zirconia (m-ZrO2) were unique in showing high selectivity to butadiene (>90%). Near quantitative yields to butadiene could be achieved over t-ZrO(2)at 673 K and a WHSV of 0.93 g THF gcat(-1)h(-1). Through contact time studies, butadiene is determined to be a primary product. Methyl-substituted THF gave only moderate increases in rates and the products showed minimal isomerization of the carbon backbone. The t-ZrO(2)catalyst was found to be relatively stable with time on stream, experiencing coking as a likely source of deactivation. Complete regeneration of the catalyst was demonstrated through calcination alone, allowing for multiple regenerations with no irreversible loss in activity or selectivity. The catalytic activity of zirconia was found to be structure insensitive, with t-ZrO(2)and m-ZrO(2)exhibiting similar initial activities; however, m-ZrO(2)was observed to deactivate much more rapidly.

20.0 g of maltitol was placed in a heat-dried 200 ml four-necked flask and purged with nitrogen, and 100 ml of dehydrated DMF was added and the temperature was raised to 90 C. To this solution, 3.0 g of methyl salicylate and 0.3 g of potassium carbonate (dried by being covered with a heat gun under reduced pressure) were added and reacted for 4 hours at 96 to 110 C under reduced pressure (125 to 155 mm Hg). After completion of the reaction, the reaction solution was concentrated under reduced pressure, ethyl acetate was added to the residue, and the mixture was refluxed for 1 hour. After cooling to room temperature, the precipitate was removed by filtration and concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 3.5 g of a brown liquid. Unreacted raw materials were removed using a chromatographic separation apparatus (apparatus: Kprep (manufactured by YMC), developing solvent: methanol / ultrapure water = 50/50, flow rate: 10 ml / min) and the structural isomers were collectively collected & 1.4 g of light pink oil was obtained.
